I have been taking Italian lessons for the past seven months, with a private tutor (insegnante). While we have concentrated on grammar for the most part, we started with pronunciation, and we have both felt that I need to speak and hear the language more in order to "get it".This has been the one deficiency, not actually speaking Italian a whole lot. I saw this book, and thought, perfect, I can read the dialogs out loud and look up words I'm not sure of the pronunciation. After it arrived I took it to class one day, and la mia insegnanate absolutely loved it. We role play, and she takes one character and I do the other (and switch) and not only do I speak a lot more, and a lot more correctly,, but the thing she really loved was being able to show me all the things we've been learning, the pronouns (especially, as these can be difficult), the expressions, etc., in action. The dialogs are not that complicated, I know a lot of words already, and she liked that. She also teaches me what things mean really, in Italy (she is from Padova, near Venezia). The book has added a whole new dimension to our classes. We spend time every class doing a new dialog, sometimes if there is an abundance of teaching moments in the dialog (as there often is) we might spend parts of two classes on one dialog.I have bought a number of Learn Italian books. And this one is by far the best. If you are really trying to learn to speak Italian, buy this book (I have both the Kindle and paperback- the Kindle is good because you can highlight passages and paste them into Google and hear how words are pronounced (highly recommended)).This has accelerated my learning, and made all the grammar rules make much more sense. Answering questions at the end of a chapter of a learning book is fine, but this book puts all the grammar rules to practical use, with normal conversations. It's great. Super recommended. I bought this book because I wanted an easy reader to reinforce my (very beginning) Italian, in preparation for a family trip. At first, I was very hopeful; the book contains a lot of material, each reading/dialog is only about a page long, and the English gloss is conveniently located on the very next page. There were occasional errors in the English grammar, but that added to the charm; I would expect a native Italian to make a few minor mistakes. The most important thing was that the Italian was authentic. Everything seemed good quality, and the level was just about right for me, so 5 stars. However, the more I used it, the less interesting it became; every dialog seemed generic. There didn’t seem to be anything about Italy or Italians. Would it have hurt the Italian-speaking author to include something about his native culture? Food, history, traditions, or major tourist sites? After all, that’s a huge part of learning a new language. Down to 4 stars. Then I read a dialog about shopping, in which a clerk explained that “We don’t have that item in ‘azzurro,’ but we have it in ‘blu.’” This was going to be interesting! What’s the difference between the Italian expressions “azzurro” and “blu?” I eagerly looked to the English, and both words were simply translated “blue.” Now the English translation read, “We don’t have that item in blue, but we have it in blue.” What? That doesn’t even make sense! Down to 3 stars. It has now been several weeks since I was motivated to pick up the book. I might look at it again. But why is there no author? Who is Lingo Mastery? And how were the faulty English glosses created? Did a person make these, or were they done by a machine translator (which would explain the ‘azzurro’ – ‘blu’ blunder)? And are there similar mistakes in the Italian? How would I know? Down to 2 stars. It’s inexpensive, and the book looks and feels good. Unfortunately, I have lost confidence in the content. And the topics, while quite varied, are not engaging or informative for someone who wants to gain understanding of Italian people or Italy.
