I notice that most people gave this book very favorable reviews. I love the book, so I was surprised to see even two negative reviews. One person thought it was too difficult. Perhaps that reviewer needs to learn more about psychology before tackling it again. I found it quite readable and extremely interesting. The other negative reviewer complained of typos. Yes, there are a few, but I've never read a book that lacked such errors, if only punctuation errors. That is no problem as long as I can figure out what was meant. It seems like a trivial complaint for a book this good. Unlike other psychology books on culture that I've read, this one is not divided into various cultures or types of people (African Americans, East Asians, seniors, LGBTTQ, etc.) pointing out their unique differences. Instead, this book is divided into psychological aspects of people (cognition, emotion, motivation, etc.) and considers what factors (genetics, geography, socialization, economics, religious belief, etc.) bring about differences. In other words, the book presents what evidence exists for WHY people differ, if and when they do, and points out what mental phenomena seem to be universal. Critical thinking is an important aspect of the book, and the authors show how people can go wrong in studying people cross culturally. Moreover, the authors merely show how and why people are different, but leave up to the reader to decide what beliefs and actions in others they are willing to accept as part of human diversity and which ones they will drawn the line on, such as female genital mutilation. Other psychology books on culture I've read irrationally ask the reader to follow the APA Ethics while accepting various practices and beliefs as acceptable or normative as long as they are typical of a certain culture. Such an approach is not helpful, and that's where critical thinking needs to be applied. This book is an antidote for that irrational approach. I don't really know what is best, but the entire time reading this book, I kept thinking there had to be a better book on cross-cultural psychology that I could read. It is packed with lots of information. It does have critical thinking style questions throughout the book. It was just too much conflicting information in an attempt to cover all side. And there were numerous errors in the book (quoting the wrong numbers for research studies and such). So, while I didn't hate it, it isn't the best read and there has to be something better out there on the topic.
